Nature Wall Poster, framed on the wall of a bright garden room with a cream wall and glazed doors to a garden in a living room Shown: Verdant Dots, from £16.00 →

A 24×36-inch poster measures 60.96×91.44 cm: 2 feet wide and 3 feet tall. It has a 2:3 aspect ratio and covers 6 square feet before framing. Turn a landscape design on its side and the width becomes 36 inches.

To judge the scale at home, mark a 24×36-inch rectangle on the wall with paper or removable tape. Check it from the doorway and your usual seat, then allow for the outside dimensions of your chosen frame and mount.

24×36 poster dimensions

Paper size in portrait orientation, excluding a frame or mount
Unit Width Height
Inches 24 36
Feet 2 3
Centimetres 60.96 91.44
Millimetres 609.6 914.4

The paper area is 864 square inches, or 6 square feet. These measurements describe the print itself. The space needed on your wall depends on the complete framed size and the gap you want around it.

Is a 24×36 poster the same as A1?

No. A1 is 59.4×84.1 cm; 24×36 inches is 60.96×91.44 cm. The inch format is 1.56 cm wider and 7.34 cm taller in portrait orientation. An A1 frame is therefore not an exact fit for a 24×36-inch poster.

Likewise, a frame labelled 60×90 cm is smaller than a 24×36-inch print. Check the stated artwork opening instead of choosing the closest-looking size. Avoid trimming the print to make it fit unless you have deliberately chosen to alter the artwork.

What size frame does a 24×36 poster need?

For a print displayed without a mount, choose a frame specified for a 24×36-inch print. Check whether that measurement refers to the artwork it accepts or to the outside of the frame. The moulding usually overlaps a small part of the paper edge, so consider any border or important detail close to the edge.

For a mounted print, choose a larger frame and a mount cut for the artwork. The mount's outside dimensions must fit the frame, while its aperture is normally slightly smaller than the paper so it holds the edges. A framer can confirm the aperture and overlap before you order.

Use the manufacturer's full outside dimensions for wall planning. Frame widths vary, so adding a fixed number of inches to every poster does not give a reliable final size. Confirm whether your chosen product includes a frame before ordering one separately.

Will 24×36 look right in my room?

This format can work as a single focal point beside a desk, in an entryway or above furniture. Its fit depends on the wall, the furniture and the design. A detailed image may invite close viewing; a simple, high-contrast composition can read clearly from farther away.

  1. Measure the clear wall area, including switches, shelves and door openings.
  2. Mark the complete framed rectangle at the intended height.
  3. Check the arrangement while seated and standing. Above furniture, leave a gap that looks balanced and keeps the frame clear of everyday use.
  4. View the layout in daylight and with the room's lights on. Glass reflections can change where a picture is comfortable to view.

For a pair, add both outside frame widths and the gap between them. If a single portrait print looks narrow above a wide sofa, compare a pair or a landscape arrangement before choosing a larger format automatically. Our wall art size guide helps you compare the available formats.

24×36 versus 18×24

A 24×36 poster has twice the paper area of an 18×24 poster: 864 versus 432 square inches. It is 6 inches wider and 12 inches taller in portrait orientation.

The proportions also differ. The 24×36 format is 2:3, while 18×24 is 3:4. Enlarging an 18×24 image to fill a 24×36 sheet requires cropping or another layout adjustment; adding borders can preserve the whole image. See the 18×24 poster size guide for the smaller format's measurements and frame fit.

Preparing your own image for a 24×36 print

If you are buying a finished Laboo print, you do not need to prepare an image file. If you are printing your own photograph or design, calculate pixel dimensions by multiplying each side in inches by the chosen pixels per inch (PPI).

Image dimensions at the final 24×36-inch print size, before bleed
Resolution Width in pixels Height in pixels
150 PPI 3,600 5,400
200 PPI 4,800 7,200
300 PPI 7,200 10,800

The resolution you need depends on the source image, viewing distance and printer's requirements. PPI describes the image pixels; DPI describes printer dots and is often used loosely in print instructions. Increasing a file's pixel count alone does not recover missing photographic detail. Start with the best original and check a proof if detail matters.

Ask the printer which file format, colour profile, bleed and safe margins to use. Requirements vary between print services, so a universal CMYK setting or half-inch bleed is not appropriate for every order.

Paper, display and care

Matte paper generally reduces reflections compared with glossy paper, while the glazing over a framed print can introduce its own glare. Check the actual paper and finish in the product description. A larger sheet does not by itself establish archival quality or edition status.

Handle prints with clean, dry hands at the edges and follow the supplier's unpacking instructions. Keep paper away from damp conditions and prolonged direct sunlight. Choose hanging hardware for the complete frame's weight and your wall type.
